Israels Poverty Line Not What You Think

Israel's Poverty Line Not What You Think 2 Israel's poverty line is supposed to define who is poor and who isn't. But does it? Just like when another wave of layoffs is announced, you've probably heard about the poverty line in the media when the numbers are shocking enough to make headlines. How are poverty lines chosen? Governments and organizations choose their own definitions of who is poor based on one of these methods: The ability to buy a specific basket of goods needed for living at socially accepted minimum People receiving Social Security payments or “income insurance” (bituach hachnasa in Israel) Having earnings equal or below a certain fixed amount, such as a (fraction of a) country's monthly minimum wage or whether people are reaching a “$1 a day” level Having a monthly income below a number relative to an average income of a country's population How is Israel's poverty line defined? Chosen in the 1970's, Israel uses a variation of the last method with the official definition of Israel's poverty line being fixed at 50% of Israeli households' median monthly disposable income. In other words, if you made a long list of each Israeli household's monthly income, sorted the values from highest to lowest and then pulled out the number that was in the exact middle of the list, a poor Israeli household is one earning less than half that number. To make that definition more meaningful, the National Insurance Institute (Bituach Leumi) publishes tables every year showing how much the poverty line is valued in shekels with the numbers split by family size, age group or other criteria.eval For example, here's a table from 2006/7: Poverty Line by Family Size Average values for 2006/7 (NIS per month) Percentage of average salary Number of family members 2,028 26.9 1 3,244 43.0 2 4,299 57.0 3 5,191 68.8 4 6,083 80.6 5 6,894 91.4 6 7,705 102.1 7 8,435 111.8 8 9,084 120.4 9 Pros vs. cons of this definition Pro â€" being based on the median and not the national average monthly disposable income means that if the ultra-rich get ultra-richer, their earnings won't distort the poverty line. Con â€" if the cost of living in Israel changes drastically e.g. due to inflation, the current definition won't show any difference in the population's ability to cope with the change. Con â€" this definition doesn't take into account pre-existing assets. If I have a Mercedes-Benz convertible but no monthly income due to a recent layoff, should I be considered poor? Changes on the way? People have been pushing for an updated definition for years and according to TheMarker (Hebrew), a government-appointed committee came to some conclusions last year. Based on which, the Treasury will push for a change in the 2009 budget that the poverty line take into account new indicators like household assets and monthly spending.eval If you liked this article, you'll enjoy The Ultimate Global Guide to Job Salaries in 2008.

UK Universities Have Let Down International Students

UK Universities Have Let Down International Students Last week it was finally announced that London Metropolitan University will have its highly trusted status licence revoked. It was disappointing that the news of London Metropolitan University had already been leaked before the official announcement. Then came the statement by the Vice-Chancellor of London Met, along with some bureaucratic words from the UKBA ,and finally social media started its own shenanigans with support for the London Met and thrashing of Coalition education policy. Wonderful. Amazing. Brilliant. And so Hypocritical. Universities and Students Unions in Britain now care about International Students? Since when? Oh, I will tell you: since the time that they realised, holy lord, we will lose the exponential sums of money from these students i.e. what is happening with London Met. I will be honest what has happened at London Met, is not at all surprising to me. Its not news. Universities and Students Unions gave up and lost the trust of International Students ages ago. 1. Coalition Policy -Students As Immigrants Remember the pledges the Coalition made of reducing the immigration numbers for Britain? Well, good, I dont know the economics behind it. But what a farce when you use a number of students entering the UK for studies as immigrants? Universities in the UK and Students Union gave up on International students then, didnt they? Well done. 2. Closing the PSW Visa Scheme Students Were Sold a Lie GCSE English result goalposts were moved mid-term and schools were rightly angered at it. Consequently, they raised their voices in support of students. Now, rewind 1 year back. The Coalition announces that as of 6th April 2012, PSW Visa Scheme will be closed. All the international students in the UK went, hold on our University advertised to us this 2 year Post Study Work visa after graduation, what happens to that? Answer Nobody cares. Universities and their Students Unions left international students high and dry. I dont have quarrels with closing the PSW visa: the elected government of Britain makes the rules, but why didnt they set this rule for new students entering, rather than those currently in the UK? 3. London Met Another Slap for International Students London Met as university, was found by UKBA to be non-compliant to its practices and audits. Fine, they should be punished. But again, why ask the current international students in the university to face the flak? Stop further international students coming to London Met, but those that are here legally, why are they put under the stress and in a way asked to get out? International Students Pay Fees with No-Guarantee? Of all the three points raised above, there is massive support and sympathy amongst universities for the students mentioned in the third point. Support for London Met. Why were they quiet, probably having roast turkey and wine for dinner, whilst commenting, oh well, too bad. I will tell you why: because London Met will not get more international students and that means less money coming in. Whilst in the other two points, students will pay or had already paid their tuition fees. Thats cool, isnt it. Once the student pays £13,000 per year and signs up for 3-4 years, then who cares if the rules change in the meantime or the student is stressed out? This is the story of UK Universities at the moment. I graduated from a British university and I enjoyed it. Britain is a lovely place to stay and study, but currently I am dismayed that my friends and fellow international students are left high and dry. International Students are sold a dream whilst in their own country, before realising that every rule in the book can be torn and their Universities and Students Unions have no power to help them.  Image Credit: Thammiesy 22

Street musicians giving away money - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Street musicians giving away money - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I saw something really cool today: A choir of 10 or 12 middle-aged swedish men were singing in one of the squares in central Copenhagen (they were really good, btw). On the ground in front of them, theyd placed a cap, and people of course put in money. And heres the twist: One of the men then started giving the money away. He took the cap and gave money to a kid standing there with his mother and to a homeless guy sitting on the ground. Then they went around to other people collecting more money (I gave what change I had). I saw them again further down the street, giving away some of that money to a guy collecting for Africa. So they werent really collecting, they were redistributing. Nifty. Actually I think it might have been a bachelor party, but a remarkably well behaved and generous one, in that case. Motivation Monday Live It

Motivation Monday Live It We are only here for a finite period of time.   How much of that time will you be able to say you have truly lived? Job search is a tiny blip of your life. You have a choice to live it or get stuck in it. We have choices to make and I strongly believe that your outlook determines your outcome.   How will you choose to live during your transition to a new job? Can I put this into perspective a bit? My son, who is in the second grade (thats 8 years old, if you dont recall), just lost one of his classmates.   She was a spunky beautiful girl who didnt let her cancer slow her down.   Maybe she didnt know it was supposed to. She lived. Even going to the hospital for treatments was an adventure for her. I could go on and tell you more wonderful stories about how she lived her short life, but I think you probably have your own example to draw from. Cancer touches the lives of too many people. My neighbor was diagnosed with terminal cancer this summer.   He is the father of two children, a 4 year old and a two year old. He is living his life day by day with his children and his wife, enjoying each moment he has with them. These stories, so close in time and so close to me, are a reminder that I have so much to be thankful for.   Any problem I have seems miniscule in comparison. What can I possibly complain about. What will you do this week to live your life? What dream do you need to fulfill? And what is stopping you?
